: an order comprising the lowest existing mammals except the Monotremata and containing the kangaroos, wombats, bandicoots, opossums, and related animals that with few exceptions develop no placenta, have a pouch on the abdomen of the female containing the teats and serving to carry the young, and usually have numerous teeth (often over 44) few or none of which are preceded by functional milk teeth, a double uterus and vagina, the scrotum located in front of the penis, and a small brain — compare diprotodontia, metatheria, polyprotodontia
